The people face pure dictatorship, but are told to believe its democracy. When any individual says anything against the party, they are brutally tortured, until they learn to love Big Brother, similar to what happens to Winston. Therefore, the community of Airstrip one demonstrates hope and then betrayal through what they believe. For instance, one may be betrayed by an individual they would not think, would misled.

Cruel punishments were acted out by any government official. Police brutality in America has been an occurance of the misuse of authority. Police officers abuse their power by assaulting and harassing individuals because they can. The novel relates to this because in the result of convicting crimes the Party would torture a victim in order to get them to confess or commit suicide. The ministry of love was where most of the police brutality occurred along with making arrests. Although the lack of a strong government may cause havoc within the country, an overwhelming abundance of governmental power will lead to the oppression of citizens, whether it be by law or from society. One prominent example of the government attempting to regulate the mental state of people is the Thought Police, who uses technology, such as the telescreen, to invade the privacy of the country 's residents.

Americans live head up high, carefree of the problems of 3rd world nations and arrogant when it comes to the topic of superiority all because of how spoiled they have gotten throughout the ages. They live such an easy, simplistic lifestyle.
