Homework , or a homework assignment , is a set of tasks assigned to students by their teachers to be completed outside the class. Common homework assignments may include required reading , a writing or typing project, mathematical exercises to be completed, information to be reviewed before a test , or other skills to be practiced. It is often thought that Roberto Nevilis of Venice, Italy invented homework in as a punishment for his students. Upon further inspection, however, this seems to be more of an internet myth than a fact due to the lack of historic evidence. Instead, it is believed that Horace Mann , an American 19th-century politician and educational reformer , invented the modern concept of homework and made it an educational essential in schools.

The Cult of Homework
The real question we should be asking is, "What do we believe should happen after the end of the school day to help ensure that students retain what they have learned and are primed to learn more? Ideally, we want children to understand that they are always learners. In school, we refer to them as "students" but outside of school, as children, they are still learners. So it makes no sense to even advertise a "no homework" policy in a school. It sends the wrong message.
