Tom is indeed a fool but his consideration, which arises from a love for his sister, separates him from his father even if the conclusion draws him away from home. Tom and his father are two men driven to the same conclusion by different modes. However, as the play develops Tom proves to be very dissimilar to his wayward father. While Tennessee Williams does intend for the reader to know why Amanda makes the comparison, he does not leave Tom to be a simple copy of his father.

Anton's Family In The Assault By Harry Mulisch
The Assault Summary and Study Guide | SuperSummary
At the moment of the assault, Anton holds a dice in his hand, which he is about to throw in the process of playing a board game with his family. The dice then moves through the story as a motif. In the midst of the commotion following the assault, Anton puts the dice in his pocket. The almost instinctual act of preserving the dice is filled with poignancy, as he will never again return to the board game: his life is in the process of being irrevocably ripped from him. The dice demonstrates the abruptness of the assault and the totality of its rapid destruction: one moment Anton is peacefully playing a board game with his family, and the next they are being executed. This is perhaps why Anton fixates on a lighter with a dice pattern during a panic attack that he later suffers as a man in his 30s.

Over the course of the novel Anton is provided with many answers to his questions, some simple and some complex. As the novel progresses so does the complexity of explanations Anton is given about the assault on his family. As the novel progresses, more complex explanations are offered to Anton causing long repressed emotions to surface leaving with him more questions than answers until he encounters Karin Korteweg for the first time in decades. Karin ultimately provides Anton with resolution about the events that transpired the night of the assault but in reality, the true depth of the assault can never fully be explained and no clear conclusion can truly be reached regarding the value of complexity.
