First published in transition in August of , "Hills Like White Elephants" became an important piece in Hemingway's second collection of short stories, Men Without Women. Hemingway wrote the story soon after the publication of his novel, The Sun Also Rises, while living in Paris. Men Without Women was well-received, as were Hemingway's other early works. He was embraced by the expatriate literary community in Paris and received strong reviews on his work in the United States and abroad. One of the themes I have chosen to focus on is alcohol. The conversation is full of tension regarding the operation that the man wants the girl to undergo. With all this tension, the alcohol seems to act as a distraction or escape from realty and postpones the final decision between the two characters. The alcohol also gives hints to how young the girl really is based on the lack of knowledge of each drink. This clue allows for the story to be seen in a very different light. I have composed a thesis to express how alcohol played a role in the short story if I were to write an essay on the topic. Thesis: Not only did alcohol act as an escape goat to the realities of the two characters situation, the drinks also uncovered background of the characters that was vital in gaining a clear understanding of the debacle.

While they wait for a train to take them to Madrid, the dangers of persuing happiness unfolds choices — how bad do you want something — how restrictions help you to understand yourself…if you put yourself out of your element — thats when you learn the most about yourself.
