The narrator eventually began to fear her husband who is also her…. Sitting for hours upon hours staring at wallpaper can make one feel like they are distant from the real world or just plain crazy. The nameless wife, who is also the narrator, name is diagnosed with temporary nervous depression. John, her husband, thinks that the isolation of his wife in this room all day is the best remedy for her to heal from her depression. Most people after they read this would probably just assume she is a crazy woman in a mental hospital but he is just affected by her husband.

However, Jane has the wrong perception of her mental health and unfortunately, the serene environment will not provide the rest needed from the daily strain of life. In reality, this isolated atmosphere is such a forced solitary confinement like that of mental asylums that it eventually envelops Jane in her insanity. It is quite alone, standing well back from the road, quite three miles from the village. Thus, this home is geographically set apart from the rest to maintain silence while literally guarded by walls and locked gates, like a mental institute.

As you read this story, consider the role that narration plays in the development of the plot and the theme. Other important questions include: Why is it important that the woman narrator have the agency and the voice to tell her own story? What effects does this particular choice of narration have on establishing a connection with the reader and eliciting certain emotional responses. Given that the woman in the story goes mad because her role in society is limited and her ability to express herself creatively is constricted, can the reader assume that the author is making a feminist statement? This topic could take at least two different approaches.
After analyzing the pattern for awhile, the narrator witnesses a woman trapped behind bars. Eventually, we realize that the woman in the wallpaper is the narrator. Throughout the story, the narrator 's mental state continues to deteriorate.
