If there was ever a topic that will spark debate, this is it. For decades now, homework has become accepted as being part of school life. All students across the globe — of both primary and secondary age — expect to have to do homework. But is that the way it should be? Is homework actually worth it?

Canadian parents win legal battle against homework | Canada | The Guardian

This copy is for your personal non-commercial use only. Do students learn anything by completing 60 extra math problems at home? Is it fair for kids from affluent families who have a computer at home — not to mention parental help — to work on assignments, while poorer kids might not have either? Can teachers expect that children who live in shelters have a place to study? One Ontario elementary school decided no, on all counts. So it banned homework.

Should homework be banned?

Usually it is the children, not the parents, who are loath to spend their evenings practising spelling and learning times tables. But a Canadian couple have just won a legal battle to exempt their offspring from homework after successfully arguing there is no clear evidence it improves academic performance. Shelli and Tom Milley, two lawyers from Calgary, Alberta, launched their highly unusual case after years of struggling to make their three reluctant children do school work out of the classroom.

TORONTO Reuters - Ontario Premier Doug Ford said on Friday parents will have the option to keep their children at home to continue with remote learning under the three scenarios school boards have been asked to consider, as the province prepares to reopen classrooms for the school year. Ontario's three scenarios are: a return to pre-pandemic education, with all students attending in person and strict cleaning guidelines in place; a modified routine allowing a maximum of 15 students per day into classrooms and adapting timetables to limit the movement of students throughout the day; or continue exclusively at-home learning. The province said depending on the state of the coronavirus pandemic in September, each school district will follow the most appropriate option. Canada's most populous province closed its schools in mid-March to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus, along with most other provinces. Earlier this week, Quebec said all schools will reopen in September, with social distancing measures in place.
