There are two forms of invariance, two ways in which something can persist in being amid the unceasing flight and flux of forms. There is that which is changeless, the cliff-face rigid and immutable against gale and tide, the frigid polestar-constancy of that which does not alter where it alteration finds. And there is that which, taking leave from itself, nevertheless is able to come back to itself. Unrelentingness: resilience.

Studying at Cambridge. My research interests usually have their rise in the literature and culture of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, though most turn out to have a longer historical contour. My areas of interest have included magical thinking; the history of medicine; the cultural life of objects and the material imagination; the relations between culture and science; the philosophy of animals; the body, sense and sexuality; literature, numbers and economics; literature and technology; the history of sound, voice and auditory media; the sociopragmatics of collective feeling and fantasy; and the developing, that is, imaginary field of psychosocioendocrinology. For the last few years, I have been intent on matters of psychosocial rhetoric. I have recently completed work on Nathaniel Fairfax , a seventeenth-century physician and Royal Society correspondent and author of A Treatise of the Bulk and Selvedge of the World A History of Asking , a book about begging, praying, pleading, wishing , wooing, suing, supplicating, seducing, and other forms of petitory practice, is on its way out from Open Humanities Press. Now I am writing about styles of seriousness and the mysticism of work.

This essay attempts to understand the strange and powerful plural-singular that is the choral voice. Though there is a rich literature within musical history concerning the aesthetics and pedagogy of choral singing, there has been little study of collective voicing, as such and in its own terms yet across the broad range of its manifestations, and little account taken of the way in which choral music functions in this broader ecology of joint vocalisations. Chorality is the name I propose for such collective voice acts. Ventriloquism, the art of "seeming to speak where one is not", speaks so resonantly to our contemporary technological condition. We now think nothing of hearing voices--our own and others'--propelled over intercoms, cellphones, and answering machines.
