Documentation for an incision and drainage or puncture aspiration should include precise location, the type of lesion e. Some descriptors indicate incision or puncture, while others do not specify the type of approach for a specific location. Similarly, ICDCM diagnosis codes linked to the procedure should accurately reflect the location and type of lesion drained. Ultrasound interpretation is a separately billable service frequently used to diagnose and locate a cyst, hematoma, seroma or abscess. Permanent image retention and documented findings related to the reason the study was performed are necessary to capture ultrasound as a separately billable service.

Word balloon catheter for Bartholin’s cyst and abscess as an office procedure: clinical time gained
Chronic inflammation can lead to ductal obstruction from pus or thick mucus which in turn can result in retained secretions within the Bartholin glands. They are typically seen as rounded unilocular cysts lying at the posterior aspect of the vagina. Their location is at or below the level of the pubic symphysis best appreciated on coronal imaging. Initially, Bartholin cysts can be treated conservatively with pain management, warm soaks and warm compressions. If infected, oral antibiotics can be used.
Back to Bartholin's cyst. If it turns out to be a Bartholin's cyst and it doesn't bother you, it's often better to leave it alone. Once the infection has been treated, your GP may still recommend having the cyst drained, particularly if the abscess is large. The main procedures are described below.
