Changes in drought around the globe are among the most daunting potential effects of climate change. However, changes in droughts are often not well distinguished from changes in aridity levels. As drought constitutes conditions of aridity, the projected declines in mean precipitation tend to override changes in drought. This results in projections of more dire changes in drought than ever. The overestimate of changes can be attributed to the use of 'static' normal precipitation in the derivation of drought events.

Pete Walker liked to start each morning with a drive around the fields. Of course, he could monitor his crops by scanning computer screens back in the farmhouse, but he liked to see and smell the tilled soil, sprouting tendrils, bushy trees, and ripe produce for himself. He sat back in the seat of his Jeep, sipped his coffee, and looked out at the horizon. The 23, acres of Walker Farms stretched before him under a pale blue, invariably cloudless California sky. About a decade earlier Pete had also spearheaded a successful expansion into processing almonds, tomatoes, and frozen vegetables; Walker Farms had significant investments in three Central Valley plants.
Water security is very important going on in the future as certain areas are experiencing higher levels of drought and water insecurity. The Sahel region of Africa lies to the immediate south of the Sahara desert, it encompasses 10 countries which are demographically different but all face recurrent and increasingly serious drought. From year to year there is a huge variability which is often attributed to ENSO cycles. Human factors do not cause drought but act like a positive feedback loop , enhancing the impacts of drought in the Sahel.
