The Occupied Times – Consumption Always and Everywhere – On the Extension of a Metaphor
When looking for theories on the idea of consumption, its origins and the related human mechanism of desire from a more basic perspective, I stumbled across a collection of essays by David Graeber. He also believes in the idea that radical and social movements can shed new light on academic discourse, and that such movements can make use of academic concerns in return. Anthropology can often afford new perspective on familiar problems — think of the useful perspective on western habits from an eastern perspective. Essays on Hierarchy, Rebellion and Desire contains an essay on The Very Idea of Consumption , and I would recommend it to everyone interested in where the term came from and what it might tell us about our own desires and social relations. However, the essays in the collection do not present a single theory of everything. Instead, they are about both the origins and possibilities of human actions.
David Graeber is one of the foremost intellectuals in the global justice movement, keeping one foot in the library and the other in the streets. His latest book, Possibilities , reflects this dual role, attempting to critically reflect on the nature of the society we live in, by using the tools of anthropology and writing for an activist audience. In his meandering way, Graeber attempts to destroy commonplace categories for understanding the world, hoping to open our eyes to the actual possibilities of how the world could be organized — without bosses or the state. Instead of building a comprehensive theory of everything — or anything — he is content to spark reflection and questioning, tossing off provocations and insights.
The occupations around the world do not rely on the bureaucratic organizational schemes that Weber described, and they actively fight against the increasing expansion of Ellulian technique. What forms account for the organization of societies? How have people organized their societies across the ages?
