Five Tips for Writing Romantic Scenes
Whether a romantic scene is touching and tearful or funny and quirky, whether it ends with a chaste kiss or an open-door love scene, there are a few common denominators for writing a swoon-worthy, heartfelt romantic scene. Connect to the stakes. Romantic moments can provide relief from tension in the book and will be most impactful when the romance of the scene connects to the stakes for the characters. What are they feeling or seeing in that romantic moment that challenges their world view? Ideally, at the end of the scene, the reader will let out the breath they were holding from the tension that just resolved.

The awkwardness of a first kiss can be sweet and special and will heighten the believability of the scene. John and Jane met and never changed again…is a love story that happens all the time in the real world but would be an extremely boring love story to read. Two people in love should cause friction, should agitate change in one another; the characters should be radically different by the end of the story because of their time spent together.
