A body paragraph in an essay is a paragraph that comes between the introduction and the conclusion. In a five-paragraph essay, there are three body paragraphs, while in longer essays there could be five or even ten. In major research papers, there are hundreds of body paragraphs. A body paragraph has three major components: 1 topic sentence , 2 explanation, 3 supporting details. Without any of them, the body paragraph seems to be missing something, and will not add anything to the theme and central idea of the essay. Although both are called paragraphs, both are very different from each other not only in terms of functions but also in terms of components.

When writing an essay, it is important to choose a topic that is not too broad. For example, do not write about football. Choose something more specific, like football drills, the greatest football team, football equipment, football practice, etc. It is important that you can think of three main ideas that you want to discuss in the essay.

In particular, I've spent an inordinate amount of time helping tackle the five-paragraph essay.
When you first learn how to write an essay, you are usually taught how to write the five-paragraph essay. As you develop as a writer and move on to higher grades, you'll write longer and more complex essays that will have more than five paragraphs. Yet no matter how many paragraphs your essay includes, it still needs to perform the same function: present a compelling argument in favor of or against a certain position. The first part of your essay will be the introduction and it should begin by telling the reader specifically what topic your essay is addressing.
